Kimyasal maddelerin tehlikelerinin sınıflandırılabilmesi için yapılan çalışmalar, son yıllarda Birleşmiş Milletlerin yapmış olduğu çalışmalarla belirli bir standarta oturmaya başladı.
 
Birleşmiş Milletlerin, OECD ve ILO ile birlikte 70'li yıllardan günümüze yaptığı çalışmalar GHS başlığı altında birleştirilerek bir platforma oturtulmuş oldu. GHS kısaca küresel uyum sistemi anlamına gelmektedir ve tehlikeli kimyasalların tüm dünyada aynı şekilde sınıflandırılmasını, etiketlenmesi, ambalajlanmasını, depolanmasını ve taşınmasını sağlamak amacı ile geliştirilmiş ortak bir standarttır.
 
CLP ise GHS'den yola çıkarak Avrupa Birliği nezdinde yapılan uyum çalışmaları ile oluşturulmuş bir tüzüktür ve sadece Avrupa Birliği üye ülkelerini ilgilendirmektedir. Doğal olarak AB'ye mal gönderen firmaların da aynı standartlarda sınıflandırma , etiketleme ve ambalajlama yapmasını şart koşar.
 
DSD ise tehlikeli madde ve müstahzarların (karışımların) tehlikelerinin tanımı direktifidir ve AB'de halen yürülükte olan ve CLP ve GHS ile yer değiştirecek olan eski sistemdir. DSD sisteminde semboller farklıdır, risk ve güvenlik cümlecikleri (S-R cümleleri) mevcuttur, sınıflandırma sistemleri değişik olarak ele alınır. CLP ve GHS de ise semboller yenilenmiştir. S-R cümleciklerinin yerini P-H ifadeleri almıştır.
 
Örnek olarak 50-00-0 CAS Nolu Formaldehyde ürününü ele alırsak sınıflandırma şekli aşağıdaki gibi değişmiştir.
